Preserving authentic character with detailed care
Heritage sash windows aren’t just functional; they’re a key part of a building’s story and history. At Ventrolla, our approach to each restoration project is more than just a repair job, it’s about respecting the original character of the property and restoring it with care, using time-honoured techniques alongside modern tools and technology.
In an age of mass production and synthetic shortcuts, our handcrafted techniques ensure that the windows we work on retain the heritage features whilst integrating modern improvements to meet energy efficiency standards and offer lasting performance. We’re very proud of our process when it comes to restoring windows, learn a bit more about it below.
The process
Our team work from an in-house joinery workshop, where we blend 21st century precision with restoration methods that have stood the test of time – cutting, shaping and finishing the timber work by hand. Our process typically follows the below structure;
Initial consultation and assessment: Our restoration process begins with a consultation at the property. We believe that a site visit is crucial, as we can assess the condition of the windows in person and spot any issues such as rot, draughts or operational problems. It also means that the restoration plan is tailored to the needs of each specific window and the homeowners’ preferences.
Quotation and design planning: Following the site visit and assessment, we provide a detailed, no obligation quote that outlines the scope of work needed and the predicted associated cost. Should this be approved we then move onto the design phase, which involves working with the homeowner to discuss and decide on the works required, whether that’s improved insulation, noise reduction, enhanced energy efficiency or any other aesthetic goals.
On-site restoration work: Our skilled craftsmen carry out restoration works on site where possible, and this is done with the minimum amount of disruption possible. This type of restorative works could include the repair of damaged or decayed wood replacements for sash cords and pulleys, draught-proofing with Ventrolla’s Perimeter Sealing System, and the replacement of any broken panes of glass.
In-house joinery work: If any work needs to be completed away from the site, the team will complete this in the in-house workshop. This includes the creation of bespoke timber windows and doors, which ensures that each piece will fit perfectly and integrate seamlessly into the property. Our workshop utilises the highest quality timber and uses traditional joinery methods to produce products that match the original heritage designs but also meet contemporary efficiency standards. The workshop also handles any specialised restoration or repair works that cannot be completed on site.
Aftercare, maintenance and guarantee: Following completion of the works, our team provide a comprehensive aftercare overview to help homeowners maintain the restored windows. This includes a run-down of the guarantees we offer.
Heritage meets performance
Whilst retaining the history of the windows is our main goal, we also consider the modern demands from homeowners – from insulation and sustainability through to long-term performance enhancers. This typically includes our market leading window systems;
The Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS): The innovative technology creates an effective barrier against cold air entering your property. The system helps prevent rattle and draughts, stops water and dust ingress, offers noise reduction levels of up to 6-10dB(A) and improves the window energy rating by up to 30%. It is also recognised by planning authorities and conservation officers. Learn more about the system here; https://www.ventrolla.co.uk/windows-doors/the-ventrolla-perimeter-sealing-system-vpss/.
The Ventrolla Sash Replacement System (SRS): The SRS works to eliminate issues like lost sash cords and the need for scaffolding during routine maintenance. It makes sash removal effortless, improves window operation and is discreet by design. It is also regulation compliant. Other performance enhancers: Alongside our systems, we also work to incorporate high performance vacuum glazing to the windows, giving the benefits of enhanced energy efficiency without sacrificing the charm of the heritage windows. Vacuum glazing offers U-values as low as <0.7w/m2k but also authentically resembles traditional single-pane windows. It also helps to protect interior furnishings from damage caused by UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.

There’s something very special about working on heritage properties and getting to know the people who own them. The windows and casements each have a story and restoring a sash window to full health is as much about the narrative and history of the property as it is about the timber and glass itself. It’s about keeping the history alive in a way that works for the modern world.
At Ventrolla, we don’t just preserve the past, we bring it back to life. Great craftsmanship, when done correctly, is timeless.
