Impressive service from start to finish

Having had 1 window installed a year ago, we have just had 6 further sash windows replaced into the existing box frames by the very efficient, able and good natured team of Rob, James and Tyler who conducted themselves very professionally in executing a perfect installation. Our expectations were very much surpassed as the team solved some unexpected surprises found in the largest of the existing box frames, that needed to completely be re built. New wood involved in all the existing box frames was finished with a top coat although they team weren’t obliged to do so, leaving us with only a minimal amount of painting. Emma Butler at the Bristol Office coordinated and supported us and the Ventrolla team providing prompt information and back up as and when required. James patiently gave us a thorough demonstration on how to remove windows to re decorate. Our whole experience with Ventrolla over the last months has been pleasant and impressive. We feel secure in the knowledge that in the unlikely event of a problem arising, that we will receive genuine and prompt attention. The windows are impressive; an exact copy of those they replaced, including 2 magnificent ‘Venetian’ (triple sash) windows which are integral to the character of our late Edwardian house. We are delighted and pleased that we took this route to gaining double glazed sash windows.

Great Aftercare

Have written a review previously for Ventrolla, but coming back to revisit with another having needed to get their support for an issue with our residential windows – due to accidental damage not a defect with the installed unit. Paul and team reacted brilliantly to help us ensure the necessary repair was completed in amazing time and minimal disruption. I couldn’t have asked for more – heartily recommend.

You've made such a difference

The lads from Ventrolla are at my home this week installing my new windows. I’m so pleased with the work they are doing. It’s so cold and wet outside but nothing stops them. All very polite and considerate and leave my home so tidy I don’t even have to tidy up when they leave. The workmanship is excellent and nothing is too much trouble for the lads. Andy, Miles, Lewis and George you have done a wonderful job. Thank you so much. You’ve made such a difference..

About Cardiff’s architecture

Cardiff’s Victorian terraces and civic buildings feature generous sash windows, ornate bay windows and Gothic-influenced decorative detailing that give the city its architectural confidence. The issues we see most often are age-driven: perished cords, rattling sashes, failed putty, rotted sub-cills under heavy bay windows, and paint layers built up over generations.

Our restoration approach is to preserve the original window wherever possible. The award-winning Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS™) delivers effective draught-proofing, while a range of glazing options, including our highest-performing energy-efficient glass, enhances thermal and acoustic performance. Our bespoke joinery team can replicate every original profile, from Victorian glazing bars to decorative bay detailing. The result is a window faithful to Cardiff’s architecture, delivering up to 30% improved energy efficiency, reduced external noise, and fit for another century of use.

Frequently asked questions

01

Is it better to restore sash windows or replace them in a Cardiff property?

For many period properties in Cardiff, restoring existing sash windows can be a highly effective alternative to full replacement. Original timber sash windows were designed to be repaired and maintained over time, meaning many common issues such as draughts, sticking sashes, broken cords and timber deterioration can often be addressed through specialist restoration techniques.

Cardiff is home to a wide range of Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian properties, many of which retain their original timber windows. Restoring these windows can help preserve the architectural character of the property while improving performance, comfort and energy efficiency. A professional survey can determine whether restoration, replacement or a combination of both would provide the most suitable long-term solution.

02

How much does sash window restoration cost in Cardiff?

The cost of sash window restoration in Cardiff depends on several factors, including the age and condition of the windows, the number requiring work and the level of repair or upgrading needed. Some windows may only require draught-proofing, while others may need more extensive timber restoration, glazing upgrades or component replacement.

Because every property is unique, costs can vary significantly between projects. Following on of our free, detailed surveys, homeowners can receive tailored recommendations based on the condition of their windows and the requirements of the building. In many cases, restoring original sash windows can provide a more cost-effective solution than complete replacement while preserving important period features in your Cardiff home.

03

Can original timber sash windows be made more energy efficient?

Yes. One of the most common reasons homeowners in Cardiff choose sash window restoration is to improve energy efficiency without compromising the appearance of their property. Specialist draught-proofing systems can help reduce unwanted air infiltration, while secondary glazing can provide an additional barrier against heat loss.

These improvements can make a noticeable difference to comfort levels throughout the year by helping to maintain a more consistent indoor temperature. Many period property owners find that upgrading their original windows allows them to enjoy improved thermal performance while retaining the character and craftsmanship that make traditional timber windows so desirable.

04

What are the signs that sash windows need restoring?

There are several warning signs that may indicate sash windows require professional attention. These include rattling sashes, excessive draughts, difficulty opening or closing windows, broken sash cords, loose joints, cracked putty, peeling paint and signs of timber decay.

Properties exposed to Cardiff’s coastal weather conditions may also experience increased wear from moisture and wind exposure over time. Addressing these issues early can help prevent further deterioration and often reduces the need for more extensive repairs in the future. A professional survey can identify the root cause of any problems and recommend the most appropriate restoration solution.

05

How long does sash window restoration take?

The timescale for sash window restoration depends on the number of windows involved and the extent of the work required. Smaller projects involving minor repairs and draught-proofing may be completed relatively quickly, while larger period properties requiring extensive restoration work can take longer.

A detailed assessment of the windows allows a restoration specialist to provide an accurate project schedule and explain the proposed works. Careful planning helps ensure the restoration process is completed efficiently while maintaining the high standards expected when working on traditional timber windows.

06

Can sash windows be restored in listed buildings and conservation areas in Cardiff?

Yes. Restoration is often the preferred approach for listed buildings and properties located within Cardiff’s conservation areas because it helps preserve original architectural details while improving the performance of existing windows. Local planning authorities frequently encourage repair and restoration rather than replacement wherever practical.

Professional sash window restoration can address issues such as timber decay, poor operation and draughts while maintaining the historic appearance of the property. This makes restoration a popular choice for homeowners seeking to protect the heritage value of their building while enhancing comfort and usability.

07

Will restoring sash windows help reduce noise from busy Cardiff roads?

Restoring sash windows can help reduce noise intrusion, particularly when improvements such as draught-proofing and secondary glazing are incorporated into the project. Gaps around poorly fitting windows often allow sound to travel into a property, so addressing these issues can contribute to a quieter internal environment.

This can be especially beneficial for homes located near busy roads, city centre locations, transport routes or other areas with higher levels of external noise. Secondary glazing is often chosen by homeowners looking to improve acoustic performance while retaining the appearance of their original timber windows.

08

How long do restored sash windows last?

When professionally restored and properly maintained, timber sash windows can continue to perform effectively for many decades. Many original sash windows found in Cardiff properties today have already been in use for more than a century, demonstrating the longevity of traditional timber construction.

Regular maintenance, including repainting, inspections and minor repairs, can help protect the timber and extend the lifespan of the restoration work. Investing in professional restoration can therefore provide long-term benefits while preserving original architectural features.

09

Can rotten timber windows be repaired or do they need replacing?

In many cases, timber windows affected by decay can be successfully repaired rather than replaced. Specialist restoration techniques allow damaged timber sections to be removed and replaced while retaining as much of the original window as possible.

The extent of the decay will determine the most suitable course of action, which is why a professional assessment is important. Where repairs are viable, homeowners can often preserve original features and avoid the cost and disruption associated with full window replacement.

10

Why is sash window restoration a popular choice for Cardiff homeowners?

Sash window restoration allows homeowners to retain the character, craftsmanship and architectural integrity of their property while improving functionality and comfort. Many Cardiff homes feature traditional timber sash windows that contribute significantly to their appearance and historical value.

Through professional restoration, these windows can be upgraded to address common issues such as draughts, rattling, poor operation and heat loss without sacrificing their original design. Restoration is also a more sustainable option than replacement, helping to preserve existing materials and reduce waste while extending the life of traditional timber windows.
