With a commanding position at the gateway to Ilfracombe – nestling in a North Devon conservation area – The Earlsdale Bed & Breakfast is a grand Victorian villa. Designed by renowned architect W H Gould in approximately 1885, the property has been a hotel and B&B for much of its life. The B&Bs doors were re-opened by new owners, Lewis and James, in April 2019 who soon realised they were in need of assistance with their sash window renovation project.

“When we were looking to find and run a B&B, we ideally wanted a period property and were over the moon to find The Earlsdale. Most of its original sash windows were still in place, although not in the best condition after years of neglect. We were drawn to the period features and were in no doubt that the sash windows should be restored professionally. ”

The search began for a suitable specialist to bring the sash windows back to life. The owners had spent time searching online for local and national companies – it was then that they came across Ventrolla.

The Ventrolla survey allowed them to budget accordingly – giving them a cost per window. This was really important considering the number of sash windows which needed attention. Once this was decided, our installers got to work.

Restoring heritage windows for traditional buildings

This stunning villa is one of few remaining in the area that has escaped being fitted with low-quality uPVC windows. However, the beautiful timber sash windows weren’t making life very comfortable for guests. So for our team, it wasn’t just about carrying out renovation and repairs – the owners were keen that we made sure the windows enhanced the guest experience, too.

“Before restoration, many of our windows were unloved. Some painted shut, many terribly draughty, some with broken ropes, dead weights and rattling frames. Since Ventrolla worked on them, our windows not only look fantastic, but we’ve also been amazed by the reduction in noise and draughts. It’s great to see the house looking as originally intended, without any drawbacks for modern living and for our paying guests, who expect the best.”
