Bespoke Timber Window Replacement for a Victorian Edinburgh Home
Built in 1870, this handsome Victorian property in Edinburgh retains the distinctive character and original detailing typical of the period. However, its timber windows had become increasingly difficult to live with. They rattled in the wind, allowed draughts, rain and external noise into the home, and many could no longer be opened.
Looking to improve the comfort and performance of their home without compromising its period character, the owners wanted replacement windows that would faithfully complement the existing architecture. Having been recommended to Ventrolla by someone who had used the company previously, they chose Ventrolla’s specialist approach to period timber windows.
A Bespoke Approach to Period Windows
The property presented a variety of window styles, each requiring a slightly different approach. Ventrolla developed a bespoke plan for the works before hand-making and installing a combination of new double-glazed timber sash and casement windows.
The project included replacement double-glazed sash windows to the lounge bay, complete new double-glazed casement windows to the front bedroom and a new double-glazed timber window for the kitchen.
Particular care was required for the bedroom casement windows, which were non-standard and required the installation plan to be adapted during the work. The Ventrolla team worked with the workshop to develop a solution that suited the proportions and character of the existing property.
Faithful Replacement with Modern Performance
Rather than simply replacing the original windows with standard units, each window was designed to suit the character of the 1870s property. The result combines traditional timber detailing with the improved warmth, acoustic performance and usability of modern double glazing.
The owners were particularly pleased with how the new windows look within the property, describing them as fitting with the character of the house while retaining the appearance of the originals.

Since the work was completed, the owners have benefited from reduced draughts and external noise, improved warmth and windows that can be opened smoothly again.
