Top quality service and product

I needed almost thirty replacement windows for a listed building in the north west of Scotland. Ventrolla were the only firm that would supply, fit and do all the paintwork themselves. The architect advising me had specified new sashes and frames for all windows, but when it came to the full survey by Ventrolla before placing an order, they said that most of the frames were perfectly good, and others only needed new sills and lower stiles letting in. This saved about a quarter of the originally estimated cost. The team of three led by Paul from Ventrolla Tayside did their work with meticulous attention to detail and dealt with a few unforeseen problems along the way without any fuss. And they cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each day. We are delighted with the result and it was actually a pleasure to have such friendly skilled craftsmen who clearly take pride in their work.

Plan to use again

We needed to get two sash windows fixed and decided to use Ventrolla to also get its draught-proofing system. More than happy with the result – we're now tempted to have them install the system on all of our other windows too! Engineer Justin was excellent, explained the work, any choices for us to make, courteous and made sure the property was cleaned thoroughly afterwards.

Draughtproofing casement windows

The work, which was all beautifully done, involved installation of 3 newly made casements in one window and draught proofing of 2 other windows all in an elderly listed house. It had to be good and was. Not a bit of rot escaped the notice of the team and all was remedied with patience and good humour. The team of James, Rob and Tyler were a pleasure to have around and very efficient.

Fantastic job!

Simon the fitter was fantastic, very professional and careful. Our window has gone from unusable to a fully operational and draft proofed sash with the original glazing and beautiful slim glazing bars intact. Upstairs our oriel window casements had massive gaps and wouldn’t open or close properly – Damien our second fitter took almost 7mm of paint off and the refitted the windows with brushes to seal the with Simon. We are delighted with the result which again has enabled us to keep the original windows which are almost as good as new now. Thank you!

regional workshop

Inside our Lockerbie workshop

Our Lockerbie workshop has been manufacturing timber sash and case windows and doors for Scotland for more than 25 years. A small, experienced team – three bench joiners, a painter-glazier, a workshop assistant and a production manager – run machinery and processes aligned entirely to traditional Scottish joinery standards.

The workshop’s real strength is the people. Craftspeople who’ve spent their working lives understanding how Scottish sash and case windows are built, how they weather, and how to bring them back to the standard Edinburgh’s heritage demands.

About Fife’s architecture

Fife’s vernacular windows are shaped by climate and practicality. Small, deep-set openings in thick stone walls; later sash and case windows in Georgian and Victorian additions. Salt air, heavy rain and strong winds make their mark quickly: failed putty, tired paint, timber decay, draughts, and perished cords.

The award-winning Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS™), bespoke Scottish sash and case joinery and specialist glazing restore every window to full weather-tight performance – faithful to Fife’s building tradition, and ready for another century of coastal weather, with up to 30% energy efficiency and noise reduction.

Frequently asked questions

01

Why do traditional Scottish homes in Fife benefit from timber window restoration?

Many properties across Fife feature original timber sash and casement windows that complement the area’s distinctive architecture, from Victorian villas and traditional townhouses to coastal cottages and historic properties. Restoration allows homeowners to retain these authentic features while improving performance, comfort and durability.

02

Can Ventrolla repair timber windows affected by coastal weather conditions in Fife?

Yes. Homes located along the Fife coastline can experience increased exposure to wind, moisture and salty air, which can accelerate timber deterioration over time. Ventrolla’s specialist restoration services help address issues such as timber decay, damaged finishes and poor operation, helping protect original windows against future weathering.

03

Are sash windows common in Fife properties?

Yes. Traditional sash windows are a prominent feature in many Fife homes, particularly Victorian properties, Georgian buildings, traditional townhouses and historic coastal homes. These original windows often contain unique craftsmanship and proportions that are difficult to replicate with modern replacements, making restoration an attractive option.

04

How can I modernise my old sash windows while keeping the character of my Scottish home?

Many homeowners want improved comfort without losing the appearance of their traditional windows. Ventrolla provides sympathetic upgrades including specialist repairs, draught-proofing and our Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS), helping improve performance while preserving the original style of the property.

05

Do you work on historic properties and conservation areas across Fife?

Yes. Fife contains many historic communities with properties where maintaining architectural character is important. Ventrolla’s restoration approach is designed to preserve original timber features wherever possible, making it suitable for period homes, listed properties and conservation-sensitive locations.

06

What problems are common with older timber windows in Fife homes?

Common issues include draughts, rattling sashes, sticking windows, deteriorating timber, broken sash cords, failing paint finishes and difficulty opening or closing windows. These problems are often caused by age, weather exposure and general wear, but many can be successfully resolved through professional restoration.

07

Can restored sash windows help improve energy efficiency in older Fife properties?

Yes. Traditional homes can often be upgraded significantly without replacing original windows. Through draught-proofing, repairs and suitable glazing improvements, restored timber windows can help reduce heat loss, improve comfort and create a more energy-efficient home.

08

Is timber window restoration suitable for countryside properties and rural homes in Fife?

Absolutely. Fife has a wide range of rural properties, farmhouses and cottages where original timber windows form an important part of the building’s character. Ventrolla can provide tailored restoration solutions that respect traditional construction methods while improving everyday usability.

09

Can window restoration help reduce noise in busy Fife locations?

Yes. Properties located in towns, coastal communities or near busy routes can benefit from improved acoustic performance. Restoration, draught-proofing and secondary glazing options can help reduce unwanted external noise while retaining original timber windows.

10

Why choose Ventrolla for sash window restoration in Fife?

Ventrolla has over 40 years of experience specialising in timber window restoration throughout the UK. Our craftsmen combine traditional restoration skills with innovative solutions such as VPSS to help homeowners across Fife preserve original windows, enhance performance and protect the long-term character of their properties.
