HOSPITAL’S WINDOWS GET THE ALL CLEAR

16 April 2009

Ventrolla London Commercial has completed a 12 week project to renovate period windows at St Leonards Hospital in Hackney.

A total of 160 sash windows at the historic premises on Nuttall Street were surveyed, renovated, draught proofed and had new ironmongery fitted.

Ian Mathieson, managing director of Ventrolla London Commercial, said: “The condition of the windows varied enormously.  Some just needed re-glazing or minor repairs to the window frame, while others needed a complete overhaul.

“We had to be flexible in the way we worked because the hospital remained operational during the project.  In some cases, for example when repairing windows in a consultation room, we opted to stay late or come in over a weekend in order to reduce disruption.”

Ventrolla’s window restoration formed part of a larger refurbishment scheme at St Leonards which was implemented by Castons of Ipswich and lasted six months.

The hospital building dates back to 1866 and by 1872 had been extended to provide beds for 503 patients.
