CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE ASHLEY DOWN, BRISTOL
17 October 2005
The expertise of Ventrolla Wessex were called upon to renovate and upgrade the sash windows of the Cabot and Davy houses – two Grade II listed, late Victorian buildings that form part of the City of Bristol College, Ashley Down. The project began in September 2003, when main contractors, Pearce Construction Ltd, brought in Ventrolla Wessex, with a view to refurbishing, restoring and replicating where necessary, 700 sash windows.
As the buildings were occupied, great efforts were made by Ventrolla to work during weekends and non term time, so to cause minimal disruption to the students. In addition to this, it was vitally important that Ventrolla worked closely with the appointed painting contractors in order to keep the building watertight and secure. Further work on the college is scheduled for the near future.
Work being carried out:
- New joinery to replicate original sash windows.
- 3mm drawn glass is fitted where necessary.
- Ventrolla’s Wood Repair System, VR90 was used to carry out repairs and fix scarfed in timber.
- Windows were fully draughtproofed using Ventrolla's unique Perimeter Sealing System.
- Sash windows were fitted with the Ventrolla Sash Removal System, which allows quick and easy removal of sashes internally for future maintenance.
- Faithfully reproducing original delicate glazing bars to replace damaged sections.
- Solid brass catches, sash lifts and security stops were fitted.
Ventrolla Wessex's Managing Director, Mark Davey comments:
“It has been the co-operation and co-ordination between ourselves, the contractor, the Conservation Officers, the planners and the painters, that has made this a highly successful project to date.”
